Making the world 50% better

Is there a goal or target that could change everything, a magic bullet? Considering how poorly the world is doing – how troubles are growing everywhere, it is about time that we question leadership. Why wouldn’t we? Whenever a company is in trouble, we evaluate the top level. Switching failing CEOs is routine in business. The world today needs new leadership, new perspectives, and new goals.

We need more sane voices, and they have been with us all along. We have just not listened. Women have different perspectives and priorities. Without getting into a stereotypical male-female conversation, we can still see that almost all violence in the world is committed by men. Meanwhile, social and nurturing skills seem to be more pronounced among women. After all, they nurtured all of us to life.

So, considering how poorly we treat nature today, it’s brilliant that The Biodiversity Plan wraps up with Target 23: Ensure Gender Equality with Equal Rights, Participation, and Leadership for Women and Girls.

If you don’t believe that men and women have different traits, that’s ok too — it’s a complex and valid conversation in today’s evolving understanding of gender. But even then, there’s no excuse for keeping women out of power.

In our experience, women are unmatched when it comes to responsibility, resilience, care, and empathy. These qualities are critical for driving The Biodiversity Plan forward.

This is clearly a feminist target, and we must applaud the members of the Convention on Biological Diversity for letting it wrap up the framework. If you still don’t understand that feminism is about equal rights, let’s call it ‘Equalism’. Are we good?

Ensure Gender Equality with Equal Rights, Participation, and Leadership for Women and Girls

Ensure gender equality in the implementation of the Framework through a gender-responsive approach, where all women and girls have equal opportunity and capacity to contribute to the three objectives of the Convention, including by recognizing their equal rights and access to land and natural resources and their full, equitable, meaningful and informed participation and leadership at all levels of action, engagement, policy and decision-making related to biodiversity.
