Restore 30% of all Degraded Ecosystems

Ensure that by 2030 at least 30 percent of areas of degraded terrestrial, inland water, and marine and coastal ecosystems are under effective restoration, in order to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services, ecological integrity and connectivity.

Bringing Life Back

Every target in the framework is vital for our survival. The first demands that we stop destroying nature’s most biodiverse places. But the damage is already deep. We’ve bulldozed fragile habitats, drained wetlands, and flattened forests—turning once-thriving ecosystems into dead, silent wastelands.

Again and again, we’ve treated nature as disposable. When a habitat vanishes, we shrug and move on.

But as the most powerful species on Earth, we have a responsibility to do better. Restoration isn’t optional—it’s a moral imperative. Being responsible means owning our impact and repairing what we’ve broken, no matter how hard or how late. It’s also completely in our self-interest. Restoring ecosystems is how we safeguard life—ours included.

Target 2 calls on us to restore 30% of degraded ecosystems. That’s letting ourselves off very easy. We can, and must, aim higher.
